Ahead of the much-anticipated 2022 F1 season, McLaren team principal Zak Brown revealed the team’s goals for the upcoming season in a recent team blog post. New technical regulations are coming up this season and the financial cap aims to reduce the disparity in car performance across the grid. With that said, Brown has reason to believe the future for the British team in Formula One looks bright and promises exciting on-track experiences from a spectator perspective.
“I think the new cars are very exciting for F1 because they should shake things up a bit. The most important thing we all want is closer races – to be able to follow a car in front easier and have more fights.” – @danielricciardo“/>![]()

Brown said on the blog:
“There are several reasons to look forward to F1 in 2022. The new technical regulations represent one of the biggest resets the sport has ever seen. Not only will the overhauls increase the unpredictability of the order of competition as we head into Bahrain for the first race, but the changes to the cars (focusing on ground effect aerodynamics) should add to the spectacle on the track for fans.”
McLaren is slowly returning to the top after visibly struggling in recent years. Lando Norris took his first pole position for the team at the 2021 Russian Grand Prix, while Daniel Ricciardo gave the team its first race win since 2012 at Monza. This has given McLaren a huge boost into 2022 and the Woking-based team are hoping to make enough progress over the course of the season to get closer to returning to their championship days.
“A fairer framework” – McLaren team boss comments on the budget ceiling
After the $145 million cap was introduced in the 2021 F1 season, a $140 million cap is on the horizon for the 2022 season. That cap will be lowered even more in 2023 and is expected to reach $135 million. Zak Brown believes this will be a massive stepping stone for teams with less financial backing to compete with Ferrari, Mercedes and Red Bull, and allow pure racing and engineering prowess to differentiate.

Brown wrote about the budget cap on the McLaren blog:
“Our opportunity to be competitive has been underpinned by the introduction of the budget cap in F1. With the spending cap lowered to $140 million this year and $135 million next, the new financial regulations give us – and the sport at large – a fairer framework to compete by giving teams the inevitable advantage reduce the greatest expenditure and the best resources.”

While Brown remains wary of the challenges ahead next season, he is optimistic that the new regulations and cost caps will give all teams a chance to compete on a level playing field.
