McLaren CEO Zak Brown has given IndyCar driver Patricio O’Ward the opportunity to test an F1 car at the end of the season – if he wins in the US this year.
O’Ward drives for Arrow McLaren in IndyCar – the sister team to McLaren’s F1 operation – and the 21-year-old Mexican is looking for his first win in the series after finishing four podiums.
In a video clip posted on Arrow McLaren SP’s Twitter feed, O’Ward enters a motor home and finds Brown waiting for him there.
“So I have an idea,” said Brown. “You already have a third one [place]You already have a second, so if you win one, I’ll talk to Andreas [Seidl, McLaren’s F1 team principal]We’ll put you in the F1 car to Abu Dhabi by the end of the year – but you have to earn it. “
A “let’s go” followed by O’Ward who added, “I’ll bring you your win, hopefully several wins – that would be good.”
O’Ward started on pole and set the fastest lap of the IndyCar opener in Alabama at the weekend, but was only able to manage P4 in a field in which six former F1 drivers, including Romain Grosjean on his Indy debut and Takuma Sato, in attendance was a two-time Indy 500 winner.
Sounds like @ZBrownCEO is keen to place another bet.
If @PatricioOward wins an INDYCAR race this season, what’s on the table?

This bet follows Brown’s promise, similar to Daniel Ricciardo, that if he is on the podium he will be able to drive Dale Earnhardt Sr.’s famous 1984 Chevrolet Wrangler, with the former NASCAR driver also being a long-time inspiration for the Australian as Earnhardt’s car number is one of the reasons Ricciardo drives the number 3 on his car.
If both drivers win their respective bets, Brown has some organizing to do to make sure he meets those stakes at the end of the year.
We’ll wait and see if O’Ward and Ricciardo can deliver the goods for their teams this season …
