Zak Brown: IndyCar and F1 can share TV ideas

McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown believes Formula 1 and IndyCar can learn from each other when it comes to TV coverage.

Formula 1 certainly hasn’t stood still when it comes to enhancing the viewing experience for the audience.

In recent years, data graphics have become an important part of broadcasts as the radio between the FIA and the teams is now played on the TV feed.

However, there has been a lot of criticism of the television coverage of the Monaco Grand Prix, which missed some key moments of the racing weekend, including some very poor timing decisions when cutting off on another camera.

The world feed goes to the various global broadcasters (although ACM was responsible for the broadcast for Monaco) and Brown believes the TV coverage of Formula 1 is indeed very strong and praises the work of Sky.

That being said, he believes there are areas in both IndyCar and Formula 1 coverage that could be improved by adopting one idea from another.

“When you watch Sky’s Formula 1 shows and see how they tell the story based on data – frankly, an IndyCar race is often more spectacular – and then you see how Formula 1 can show that a Formula 1 weekend is very exciting too, the broadcasts make it a pretty exciting story, ”he told Motorsport.com.

“I think there is still room for improvement [for IndyCar].

“At the same time there are things like the helmet camera [in IndyCar]which is really fantastic and which Formula 1 should also take over. So I’m in the privileged position of seeing both and I think both sides need to learn from each other. “

Brown said he recently saw IndyCar with McLaren F1 driver Lando Norris and Sky F1 commentator Martin Brundle.

With five different winners in the first five races, there can be no criticism of the race quality, and Brown enjoys the commentary work, but returned to the idea that IndyCar needs more data for the broadcasts.

“If you look at where the sport can still progress, more data can improve the way the story is told,” he said.

“I saw the last race with Lando [Norris] and Martin Brundle. The commentators are fine, the quality of the broadcast is great, the same goes for the race itself. But some data is missing. “
