Lando Norris, 21, has signed a multi-year extension with McLaren F1 that solidifies the team’s driver line-up for the near future. The announcement comes on the occasion of the one year anniversary of McLaren, which announces a multi-year contract with Daniel Ricciardo to switch from Renault.

“My commitment to McLaren is clear: my goal is to win races and become Formula 1 world champion,” said Norris in a press release.

Norris joined McLaren in 2019 as one of their two full-time drivers and in 42 career starts with them has two podiums, both third. Last year, Norris was on the podium at the Austrian Grand Prix at the start of the season. He repeated the feat in the second race of the season at Imola.

The length of the extension was not disclosed, only that it is a multi-year agreement that includes “2022 and beyond”.

In addition to his podium at Imola, Norris has two more top fives in four races this season. He is currently fourth in the drivers’ championship.

“I’m very excited to have extended my relationship with McLaren from 2022,” said Norris. “I’ve been on the team for almost five years and I feel very much part of the family here. I can’t imagine starting the next phase of my career anywhere else. … Since we joined in 2017, we have made consistent progress and together have clear ambitions for the future. “

Norris was the test and simulator driver for McLaren in 2017 before becoming their reserve driver in 2018.

The announcement will be made before the Monaco Grand Prix, which was canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Norris finished eleventh in the leading lap in this 2019 race.

Norris finished ninth in the championship hunt last year with six top fives in 17 races. He finished on a high level with two of those strong runs in the last three races.

McLaren finished third in the Constructors’ Championship last year with 202 points, seven points ahead of fourth place at Racing Point.

“I am excited to extend our agreement with Lando for 2022 and beyond,” said Zak Brown, CEO of McLaren Racing. “He was instrumental in our return to form here at McLaren and we are proud of the growth he has shown since he first started with us in 2017. Lando is one of the best talents on the Formula 1 grid and we look forward to seeing it, he keeps getting stronger on and off the track. “
