The contrasts couldn’t have been more significant. It was Hamilton’s worst qualifying performance since Hockenheim in 2018; and Ferrari’s first pole position after Mexico in 2019. In the ensuing period, early in 2020, the Italian squad fell epically out of favor after being caught cheating on FIA-mandated fuel flow regulations following castration were further hindered by sanctions. An unusual aerodynamic concept enabled them to survive their second worst season in F1.
