McLaren team boss Andreas Seidl has clouded the renewed hope that the Woking team will be able to fight for cutlery again as early as 2022.
In search of their first title win since 2008, McLaren is firmly on the recovery path, with year-over-year improvement over the past four seasons and more encouraging signs for 2021.
With three podiums in Lando Norris’ pocket, it has sparked a new wave of belief that McLaren could overtake its schedule – but Seidl said it will be “years” before title ambitions can be achieved.

“There is still a long way to go, but we are confident that we will do our best and get back to our level in a few years,” Seidl told Sky Italia.
“We’re very happy with the progress we’ve made over the past two years, but at the same time it’s important not to get carried away.
“For me, the most important thing is to keep growing.
“If we look at the past three years, we’ve already made progress and the key will be to keep up that pace.
“It is important not to have any major deficits compared to the other teams. We must also try to complete the wind tunnel, which is two years behind schedule.
“These are the most important advances we have to make.
He continued, “Of course, with a new regulation there is some kind of opportunity for everyone.
“At the same time, there is a reason why Mercedes and Red Bull are ahead of everyone at the moment: They do better work, are better teams, so they have an advantage thanks to their equipment.
“They have bigger teams, and that is what they will bring in the new years with the new regulations.
“That is definitely an important task, development continues and we have to get on the right foot.
“At the same time, we have to think about the team that is on track, about our facilities, and try to deal with the budget cap that will expand over the next few years.
“We have to keep improving as a team and try to do a better job over the next few years and then I think we can be back in front in a few years.”
