This 2015 McLaren P1 Hybrid only has 433 miles – and it’s up for grabs – Robb Report

A 2015 McLaren P1 hypercar.

Until November 10, the online automobile auction house CollectingCars.com is offering a 2015 McLaren P1, the plug-in hybrid hypercar that took the British brand to the most remote areas of the performance sky at the time. When it made its debut at the Paris Motor Show in 2012, the P1 was a key statement, the spiritual successor to McLaren’s F1 (produced from 1992 to 1998) when McLaren jumped into the electrified fray with Ferrari’s LaFerrari and Porsche’s 918 Spyder.

With a top speed of 217 mph and a time from zero to 100 mph of 2.8 seconds (it hit 124 mph in 6.8 seconds), the P1 met every performance standard of the day in terms of numbers, however there was so much more to it than model than speed. This car gave a glimpse in the direction of McLaren, a stepping stone that paved the way for an electric future. But there is a lot to love in the here and now, and for number guzzlers, a combined output of 903 hp and 664 ft lbs of torque is a healthy start to every day of driving.

The powertrain combines a rear center-mounted, double-charged 3.8-liter V-8 engine with 727 hp and 531 ft lbs of torque with an electric motor that is mounted directly on the engine and makes the extra. The range in pure electric mode is around 30 km, ideal for early morning departures so as not to wake a quiet neighborhood. The entire ensemble drives the rear wheels via a seven-speed Graziano dual clutch transmission with paddle shift.

In keeping with the state-of-the-art powertrain configuration of the McLaren P1, its design is engineered and built with a precision worthy of a Formula 1 car. At the heart of McLaren’s approach to minimizing weight while improving strength and safety is carbon fiber, which encompasses the monocoque chassis, which weighs just 199 pounds. The carbon fiber body also makes the load easier and the material is present everywhere.

The interior is purely for business purposes and, out of consideration for bare carbon, has no carpets in order to save even more weight. Carbon fiber not only functions structurally, but also as an aesthetic element. Carbon racing seats are covered with carbon black leather, Alcantara surfaces are complemented by red stitching. Overall, the eager weight-saving program weighs the P1 at 3,076 pounds.

McLaren’s P1 is a masterpiece on the road, drawn largely from Formula 1 expertise, applying aerodynamic advances from motorsport to the service of speed and stability. Its hybrid-electric substructure offers additional power, including an Instant Power Assist System (IPAS), which gives the electric motor an additional kick for even faster acceleration. The Kinetic Energy Recovery System (KERS) stores energy when braking for later use when accelerating. And the Drag Reduction System (DRS) controls the triggering of the rear wing and adjusts it to increase the top speed in a straight line.

The example offered here (shown here) comes from the last year of production and is painted in Elite Fire Black, with red badges and brake calipers that provide a visual contrast. In addition, the roof snorkel, bumpers, side walls, air ducts, exterior mirrors, tailgate insert and rear wing are made in glossy carbon to remind you that this mechanical marvel is both a work of art and a technology.
