BMW has just announced that it will produce its last production V12-powered vehicle in June this year. The only BMW to come with a V12 engine now is the M760i xDrive sedan, and yes, this 7 Series will indeed be the car to sport BMW’s last V12.
To mark the occasion, BMW will launch a special “Final V12” edition of the M760i, of which only 12 will be built for the US market. Before we get into what makes the Final V12 so special, let’s talk about the V12 engine itself. BMW’s current V12 engine is a big 6.6-liter twin-turbo that produces a whopping 601 horsepower and 627 pound-feet of torque. That’s good enough for a 0-60 mph run in just 3.6 seconds in the big ol’ sedan. It’s mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and funnily enough, the M760i performs launch control from second gear instead of first, due to the massive amount of torque it produces at low revs.
What makes the Final V12 special is that it gets a number of unique design and styling touches. First, BMW adds a “V12” badge on the rear – the standard M760i has no such exterior badge. The 20-inch wheels are finished in either Window Gray or Jet Black and then “polished to reveal a dark silver surface highlight”. These wheels also hide the customer’s choice of blue or black calipers. As you’d expect, BMW has a full range of custom paint colors to choose from – BMW says customers can choose from over 80 different exterior colors. Unfortunately, the only photo we have of the car now is of the “V12” badge set against some beautifully shimmering black paint, so we’ll have to wait to see the final product.
On the inside, you’re greeted with “THE FINAL V12” treadplates. The same lettering can also be found on the engine cover of the V12. A plaque affixed to the console reads “1 OF 12” to ensure that everyone in the car is aware of its exclusivity. As you might expect, all Final V12 editions come with all the check boxes checked. You’ll even receive a custom-made desk trophy listing your specific M760i’s paint color, leather interior and VIN.
To buy this particular 7 Series it sounds like you need to be approached by BMW rather than waltzing into a dealership. Only select customers who have “a long history of owning the V12 7 Series” will be targeted. So if you’re not, your chances of buying it are slim. For those who bought the original BMW 750iL with its 5.0-litre V12 way back in 1987 and have stuck with BMW V12s all these years, then we suspect one of these Final V12s might bear your name.
