Seidl “disagrees” with Masi about the F1 decision with the yellow flag

Seidl "strongly disagrees" with Masi over yellow flag decision

McLaren filed a complaint against AlphaTauri driver Yuki Tsunoda for allegedly exceeding the speed limit under double-waved yellow flags in response to Max Verstappen’s accident on the main straight in Baku.

The incident was initially covered by double-waved yellow tones before a safety car was requested, with the race then being suspended under a red flag.

The TV-Welt-Feed sent McLaren’s message to Masi, in which the team said it was “surprised” that Tsunoda had not been examined.

“For me, the entire field should simply be penalized because, according to the rules under double yellow, it doesn’t slow down,” Masi replied.

When told that Tsunoda’s break was “obvious”, Masi said that “all are obvious” and that he would discuss the matter with the drivers at the briefing before the French Grand Prix.

Video footage of the field passing the crash site and double-waving yellow flags appear to show varying speeds and degrees of slowdown.

After the race, Seidl said that the rule did not need clarification, as it was “clear” what the drivers had to do and that it was the wrong decision not to do anything.

“From my point of view, things happened out there today that were clearly not okay,” said Seidl.

“Also in the context of what we were fined for yesterday, for example [in qualifying] – but that too is all we can do, we can only report it.

“If the race director is of the opinion that no investigation is necessary because everyone is doing it, which I absolutely disapprove of, you have to ask Michael Masi what he is up to with it.”

A number of drivers expressed concerns after the race about the time it would take the race management to deploy the safety car after the Verstappen accident. Charles Leclerc called it a “joke” on team radio. The topic should be discussed at the next driver briefing.

When asked if Masi was doing a good job in his opinion, Seidl said: “In general we are very happy with the work Michael is doing, which is a very difficult job.

“But the most important thing on our part is transparency and consistency and a good dialogue that we normally have with him.

“Of course there are now and then situations in which you disagree. It’s normal: we’re on the side of the competition, he on the side of the FIA.

“But I think when you look back on the time since he took over, I think he did a great job.”
