Daniel Ricciardo is very much looking forward to returning to Perth after 18 months on the road during the Formula 1 offseason.
On the Beyond the Grid podcast, the Australian McLaren F1 driver shared his excitement about returning to his hometown after deciding not to return home last Christmas.
“If it means quarantine, I do not agree, but if that is necessary, then I’ll bite the bullet this year,” Ricciardo confirmed.
“Yes, I decided against it last year, but it will be over 18 months before Christmas before I have been home.
“Obviously no one has been able to travel so I haven’t seen mom and dad in 18 months and my sister has my niece and nephew.
“I’m close to the family, that’s how we are, that’s how we were brought up.
“Well, not seeing her for so long is tough, and it’s probably the first year of my life that I’m actually homesick.”
In the current season, which ends on December 12th in Abu Dhabi, there are still six laps to complete.
Currently, all individuals entering Western Australia from abroad are subject to the Australian Government’s mandatory 14-day hotel quarantine period.
As a result, Ricciardo could still be quarantined on Christmas Day.
Ricciardo is eighth in the 2021 drivers’ championship, 21 points ahead of Pierre Gasly, but just as many behind Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc.
Formula 1 is returning to Austin this weekend for the United States Grand Prix, a place Ricciardo has enjoyed racing despite mixed results in recent years.
Although Ricciardo failed to finish the United States Grand Prix in 2017 and 2018, he achieved podiums with two third places in both 2014 and 2016.
The United States Grand Prix will take place on October 25th at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA).
