On the eve of the Monaco Grand Prix, McLaren announced that Norris had signed a new multi-year deal with the team.
The Woking-based team has not won Formula 1 since 2012, while it has not won a world title with Lewis Hamilton since 2008.
However, McLaren has seen a strong upswing in recent years after its sterile stint at Honda, bouncing back to fourth and third in the Constructors’ Championship over the past two seasons – after only finishing ninth in the championship in 2017.
Even with the new rule changes next year, Norris is confident in McLaren.
“No, I have great confidence in my team and McLaren,” said Norris before the Styrian Grand Prix this weekend. “I’m happy. There is always a bit of the unknown. But I think we are going in the right direction. I have a good team behind me. And I would like to stay with them for a few more years.

“We will see. I am confident that they will be strong, but I am sure that there will be many other teams that will fight us and will be strong too. But I am happy with who I am. “
Norris was one of F1’s top performers in 2021, finishing in the top five in six of the first seven races.

Fourth ahead of Valtteri Bottas in the drivers’ championship, Norris admits that his long-term future in the sport is confirmed and gives him the confidence to do his best.
“It only gives you confidence as a driver when you know you will be staying in place for X seasons,” added Norris. “When you make a mistake, it’s not like you think it might end. Much is trust.
“I don’t think there are too many other things to say. You can just focus on the rest of the season, you can focus on yourself, you can also have a longer term plan of what you want for the second and third years, and so on. As a driver, it gives you the confidence you need in Formula 1 because it can be a very tough and cruel sport at the same time.
“You can see with other drivers and teams how quickly things are turned upside down and not going as they should and so on. Having this security and this confidence in the future is therefore extremely important for a driver if you want to achieve top performance. “
