Formula 1 is just months away from racing in the new era of the sport. The 2022 season will bring a new set of rules and new cars that will encourage closer competition between teams. The new cars will be less aerodynamically sensitive and generate different downforce than previous cars. McLaren F1 Technical Director James Key explained how the wings of the new cars will behave.

The front wing in 2022 is a massive thing: McLaren Chief Technology Officer James Key

As Motorsport reports, the British engineer mentioned that the front fenders will be tighter this season. He also revealed that testing will be tougher as the FIA will pay more attention to the changes.

“I think the sensitivity of aeroelastics has changed, and I think that’s pretty understandable from the regulations that have been discussed at length, like components that can flex can be better managed,” Key said.

“The front wing in 2022 is a massive thing, but it still has very strict guidelines on stiffness, so I think there will always be a few tricks, but I don’t think there will be any easy exploits.

“You have a few different components on the car that can have a certain level of stiffness that you could legally exploit, so there are different new tools you can play into 2022,” Key said.

The flexi wings were a big issue in the 2021 season so hopefully it could be solved with more rigorous testing. Key hopes they have developed their car to be competitive next season. McLaren could be a title challenger this year if they have a fast car.
