After a start to the season in which we achieved three top five finishes, including a podium, it might not sound like a lot when we come home sixth and eighth at the Spanish Grand Prix. On a track where overtaking is notoriously difficult, this was a solid, if not spectacular, result for the team. We are leaving the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya with many positive results: Daniel had his strongest weekend of the season so far, the upgrades that we brought to Spain have brought a leap forward in performance and we are still the only team that Races have scored double points this year – a result that keeps us third in the constructors’ championship, albeit only five points ahead of our great rival – and friend – Ferrari.
Here’s what social media made of it …
There was an unexpected phone call on Friday for McLaren underwear and sleepwear. While #TheFifthDriver was a little surprised by the question, it appears that there may be a demand for a new line of products at the McLaren store. We’re sure Ann Summers and Victoria’s Secret will tremble at the thought of a pair of Strategy Briefs from the Randy Singh Collection in their latex boots – and if not, we sure are.
While some called for underwear, others were only pleased to receive a thumbs up from McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown.
Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, with its breakneck, fast corners and aggressive curbs, can really affect the mind and body of a driver – and even those of you watching at home. Just as well, lots of goodies flew around this weekend to keep everyone on their toes. Mary Berry would have been proud of the cakes that were on display on all social networks, and the rain stayed off the track – just – which meant there was no damp soil.
Coincidentally, the paddock was on fire with a rumor that a new TV series, The Great British Rake Off, was in the works. If that’s true, Mick Schumacher’s legendary Schu-Rolls are sure to make him one of the bookmakers‘ Early favorite but will face stiff competition from Lewis Hamilton’s “Still I Rise” soufflés.
Outside of baking, @ AndyRobinson100 gave his qualifying prediction and was half right:
It also turns out that you can take the boy out of McLaren, but you can’t take McLaren out of the boy:
That’s the thing about McLaren: once the magic of the team gets under your skin, we’re with you for a lifetime – unless you opt for excruciatingly painful laser removal. Just ask @ Nathanings …
From one art form to another:
With an exciting race in prospect, @elliemai_thom asked:
The answer: No, no, it’s not.
After a rocket launch that catapulted from seventh on the grid to fifth, Daniel did an excellent job outpacing Sergio Pérez for much of the Spanish Grand Prix in the faster Red Bull.
While Lando’s move to Kimi Räikkönen later in the race also found a lot of love in the social area:
And then, after his second pit stop, Daniel Esteban put Ocon on to regain P6 …
Exactly.
Since Lando and Daniel were both safely at home in the points, one place higher than on a track where overtaking is anything but easy, the fans were full of praise for the good work on the track:
It sure can @OneEyesOfRacing. It sure can.
Monaco baby here we come!
