• McLaren Racing opens a new motorsport chapter in 2022
• The decision to participate is made after a detailed assessment by McLaren based on a number of strategic, economic and operational criteria
• The team is operated by McLaren Racing with existing staff from outside the Formula 1 program
McLaren Racing will open a new chapter in motorsport in 2022 when it joins a team in Extreme E, the innovative all-electric off-road series that aims to promote sustainability and diversity through racing. The team will compete in the Five Race World Championship, helping to accelerate McLaren Racing’s own sustainability and diversity agenda while reaching new fans and partners, and growing the McLaren Racing brand and franchise.
Extreme E highlights the effects of climate change in some of the world’s most remote environments, promotes the adoption of electric vehicles to pave the way for a lower carbon future, and provides the world’s first gender-sensitive motorsport platform.
The decision to join Extreme E follows a detailed assessment of the series by McLaren based on a number of strategic, economic and operational criteria. These were underpinned by a clear need to accelerate McLaren Racing’s own sustainability mission, which is centered around carbon reduction, recycling, reuse and disposal of waste, and diversity, equality and inclusion.
Extreme E aims to minimize its environmental footprint but maximize awareness by driving in places already damaged or affected by climate change, and taking fans deep into the planet’s most pressing environmental issues. At the same time, the series has built in equality and diversity, with each team lined up with a male and a female driver.
At the same time, Extreme E supports the automotive industry in the development of future-oriented technologies and uses racing as a platform for mobility innovations, with which motorsport has long been associated as an accelerator for research and development.
Zak Brown and Alejandro Agag
McLaren has been a leader in electric motorsport from the start, providing battery power for the FIA Formula E Championship for Gen 1 and Gen 2 seasons, using the same technology that pioneered the McLaren P1 hypercar. With the entry into Extreme E, McLaren Racing will further expand its know-how and expertise in the field of all-electric racing.
Concurrent competition in different series has been embedded in McLaren Racing since the team’s inception, with Can-Am, Formula 1, INDYCAR and Le Mans all being part of McLaren’s motorsport heritage and innovation. Extreme E will complement the diverse McLaren Racing portfolio, with Formula 1 taking center stage along with INDYCAR and eSports.
The team is operated by McLaren Racing, using both existing staff outside the Formula 1 program and additional specialist resources. Like all teams, McLaren Racing is limited to four mechanics and one engineer for the branded car and its two drivers at each event, transported by Extreme E as part of the overall franchise package.
McLaren Racing CEO Zak Brown commented:
“Since Extreme E was announced, we have closely followed the progress of the series. Our attention was immediately drawn to the innovative format of this motorsport platform, especially the opportunity to accelerate and strengthen our own overarching sustainability agenda, which shares the same priorities as decarbonization, waste reduction, diversity and equality.
“At the same time, it will enable us to reach a new audience with an innovative racing format, reach a new generation of fans through content delivered through a variety of channels, and provide partners with a purpose-built competitive platform to connect with and participate in a positive, powerful narrative.
“McLaren has always been on the front lines and has never been afraid of pushing new boundaries. This new company is true to our roots of participating in a wide variety of categories, innovation and valor. Extreme E paves new avenues in motorsport as a force for good to face some of the greatest challenges of our world today and in the future.
“While Formula 1 like INDYCAR and eSports will always remain at the center of our world, our entry into Extreme E complements the McLaren Racing franchise and will complement and support all of our programs. We will compete against big names that we know very well from F1 and INDYCAR, but as with all series in which we compete, the objective of the competition is clear: We are there to win. “
Alejandro Agag, CEO of Extreme E, said:
Extreme E’s mission is to use sport to create awareness and accelerate clean technology innovations that benefit the mobility industry and beyond. Having McLaren on board, symbolizing the highest level of racing and automotive innovation, is a great confirmation that what we delivered in our first two races of the first season is already having a real impact on motorsport.
“We are absolutely delighted to welcome Zak and the high performing McLaren Racing team to Extreme E, and we certainly can’t wait to see the team perform on their first off-road debut in electric racing. Season 2 was just getting very exciting! “
