McLaren Racing – 2021 Saudi Arabia Grand Prix

McLaren Racing - 2021 Saudi Arabia Grand Prix

Jeddah Corniche Circuit, Sunday 4th December

Hear from McLaren Formula 1 drivers Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo as well as from team principal Andreas Seidl after the Saudi Arabian Grand Prix.

DANIEL RICCIARDO, # 3

Started 11th
complete 5.
Fastest lap 1: 32.716 minutes on lap 43 (+1.982 seconds, 11th)
Pit stops 1, round 13 [Hard/Medium] (under red flag)

“That felt like the longest race ever. The start of the race was so late that it felt like a long day, and then with all the restarts, even longer. The starts were good, I always made up positions right up to the last, when I stayed in fourth place.

“I used the hard tire to start the race so we couldn’t really use it when restarting and we had to use the medium tire and I think the hard tire was the better tire. Well, I couldn’t quite understand Esteban [Ocon], and I tried Valtteri. to stop [Bottas] as long as I could. I was surprised how long I held him up, but I think when he had his tires readjusted it was pretty hard to hold him back. I defended him one lap, passed him again, and then he caught me. I struggled a bit with the tires in the end, so I’m happy to have stayed in the top 5. It definitely makes up for yesterday. “

Saudi Arabia Grand Prix

LANDO NORRIS, # 4

Started 7th
complete 10
Fastest lap 1: 31.914 minutes on lap 49 (+1.180 seconds, 8th)
Pit stops 1, round 10 [Soft/Hard] (2.9s)

“A very unfortunate day. I think we earned a lot more today. The team did a good job and I thought I had a good race, but the red flag changed everything and ruined any chance of a better result, just because I was unlucky. It was a long race after that. So I’m disappointed. The positive thing is that we got another point – but I think we deserved a lot more. “

ANDREAS SEIDL, team manager

“Mixed feelings tonight. However, I am very happy that we responded with a strong performance here in Jeddah after three very challenging weekends during the triple header. After starting from P11 in qualifying yesterday due to his damaged flooring, Daniel had a very competitive race to finish P5. Lando got off to a strong start and unfortunately had a lot of bad luck with the red flag, which cost him a lot of positions – but he fought back well for one point.

“A big thank you to everyone: the team here at the track, which works in very hot conditions, everyone back at the factory and our colleagues from Mercedes HPP. Operationally, despite the challenging circumstances, we drove a clean race with the red flags, which was crucial in order to achieve the good result that we had with the chaos around us. Finally, congratulations on a successful first Saudi Arabian Grand Prix here in this new and exciting venue in Jeddah. One more thing in 2021: Let’s go. “
