McLaren is fully behind the idea of creating sessions during the season where it would be mandatory to have a young driver.
While McLaren doesn’t currently have a junior driver about to get into Formula 1, there are several other teams with good academy prospects that are struggling to find their way into Formula 1.
Under the current rules, FP1 and FP2 will be available if teams want to put a reserve or junior driver in the car, although discussions are currently underway to make it possible for young drivers to attend one of these Friday meetings.
And it is a concept that McLaren boss Andreas Seidl supports and confirms that the team expressed this attitude in the discussions.
“We have been very supportive of introducing mandatory sessions in the tests after the season or even during the season in training units so that rookies can complete official sessions,” he said, as quoted by Autosport.
“With all the limited testing, it’s very difficult for rookies to get seats these days.
“We are very satisfied with that and we are also in favor of promoting this even more. It’s the discussion we’re having with the other teams, the FIA and the F1.
“I suppose we’re looking at who we actually want to give the chance to be in our car for these sessions. This is a process that is going on right now. I am absolutely satisfied with that. “

However, Seidl is interested in this being a gradual transition, with the number of sessions for young drivers increasing over time.
“It also makes sense that we should introduce this step by step,” suggested Seidl.
“We’re talking about two or three training sessions next year, so that’s a good first step.
“But I think that we would like to increase this number of sessions in the future as well.
“It is good that this is also mandatory, so that in the end it is the same for every team from a sporting point of view and, in the end, fair. That is why we supported each other very much in the implementation. “
