
There was a lot of talk and controversy about the Mercedes engine in the second half of the 2021 season. The German team was super fast on the straights in the last part of the season. Red Bull claimed the Mercedes team and Lewis Hamilton had an advantage ahead of the final races due to their flavorful engine. But according to McLaren team boss Andreas Seidl, there was no difference in performance with the Mercedes engines.

McLaren is an engine customer from Mercedes. Seidl mentioned that they didn’t find anything special in the data when they changed the engine in the middle of the season. The team from Woking also had a new engine in Turkey, but did not find the same increase in performance as Mercedes.

As reported by FormulaRapida.net, the McLaren team boss mentioned that the sharp engine claim may apply to Toto Wolff and not to him. However, he said there is a performance difference when a team puts in a new engine.
“When I look at the data and we compare the data of other teams, I don’t see that there has ever been an exceptionally sharp engine,” said Seidl.

“I think that’s a question for Toto. What does this formulation actually mean? In the end, we were satisfied with what Mercedes delivered to us all year round. It is clear that it is the same for every aggregate manufacturer.

Whenever you install a new engine versus a high mileage engine, there will be a difference in performance due to the natural degradation of the engines. That can cost a few tenths. I see the same thing across the grid. But I don’t see anything spectacular or special about teams or equipment manufacturers, ”said Andreas.
The “sharp engine” gave the German team a head start and won the constructors’ championship. However, it is unclear how two teams using the same engine will get different results in engine performance. Maybe after more rigorous testing we have an answer.
