McLaren’s in-house personalization arm has developed a Golf-inspired 720S to mark the oil company’s return as a strategic partner for Woking’s Formula 1 team.
McLaren and Gulf resumed their partnership in July 2020. McLaren said the paint job pays homage to golf design while emphasizing the racing connection between the two brands that began with founder Bruce McLaren.
The partnership will also be honored with a one-off paint job for the Monaco Grand Prix on May 23rd. The paint scheme is used on both MCL35M vehicles, Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo’s suits, and the racing team’s wider kit.
McLaren Special Operations (MSO) designed the 720S with a hand-painted exterior in a traditional blue and orange golf livery. The design took 20 days to be hand-painted, with other nods to traditional golf colors including orange calipers.
There are blue and orange stitching in the car. Golf logos are embroidered on the headrests and painted on the sills. The steering wheel also has an orange center band that matches the outer stripe, and its carbon fiber center section is painted dark blue.
A limited number of McLaren customers can have their 720S redesigned in Golf livery.
“This project is an example of MSO’s capabilities and reflects the recent full restoration of the McLaren F1 GTR 25R, a car that was driven in the 1990s,” said Mike Flewitt, McLaren CEO.
“The 720S in such an impressive paint job and interior, which was developed in close collaboration with Gulf, perfectly shows the potential of our customers to work with the competent team at MSO to personalize their McLaren.”
McLaren first partnered with Gulf from 1968 to 1973, making appearances in F1 and Can-Am. The partnership was revived in the 1990s with the GTC Competition Team’s successful McLaren F1 GTRs, who won victories in the 1996 BPR Global Endurance Series and the GT1 class at the 1997 24 Hours of Le Mans.
