Listen to the V12 exhaust from the Gordon Murray T.50

Listen to the V12 exhaust from the Gordon Murray T.50

The Gordon Murray Automotive T.50, promised to be the largest – and perhaps the last – analog supercar, is still being tested. The last time we saw a T.50 prototype, its mid-engined naturally aspirated V12 was limited to low speeds. Now GMA has released another video that shows two test mules at slightly higher speeds and gives us a better idea of what kind of exhaust noise to expect.

The tests take place on the Dunsfold test track in England, which is known for its appearances on “Top Gear”. Although the 3.9-liter V12 built by Cosworth is said to have a redline of 12,100 rpm, it is still limited to 5,000 rpm in these tests. Still, that’s enough to give us an idea of what kind of acoustic attack the car will deliver.

As it turns out, at low revs there is much of the baritone rumble that seems indispensable in modern performance cars. At higher revs, the engine delivers a bit more of the high-pitched hum of the T.50’s spiritual predecessor, Murray’s McLaren F1, although the exhaust sound is quite loud overall. There’s definitely more of a primal roar than the purely business precision machine hum of F1.

But while it may sound like other supercars, Murray firmly believed that the T.50 would remain the supercars versus supercars. It will put agility and handling above raw horsepower, with a design that is more subtle than modern look-at-me mobiles.

As such, Murray says the T.50 will be about the size of a 718 Boxster and lighter than a Mazda MX-5 Miata. While the output of 654 horsepower at 11,500 rpm and 344 pound-feet of torque at 9,000 rpm can’t win boasting rights in the chair, its power-to-weight ratio should improve that of the Ferrari LaFerrari.

Production of the 1 + 2-seater is scheduled to begin in 2022. A production run of only 100 units was promised by the world’s greatest living super sports car engineer. You should act quickly.
