Beatles guitarist George Harrison’s Mercedes-Benz 600 will be auctioned

Beatles guitarist George Harrison's Mercedes-Benz 600 will be auctioned

George Harrison, nicknamed “The Quiet Beatle”, was not only the lead guitarist of the legendary British band, but also the author of famous songs like Here Comes the Sun, Something, While My Guitar Gently Weeps and Taxman.

At the height of the Beatles’ success, Harrison acquired a 1967 Mercedes-Benz (W100) 600 which is now being auctioned.

This luxury sedan was first used as a demonstration vehicle for Mercedes GB before it was acquired by Harrison.

It remains in its original factory paint scheme with white paint over a black leather interior and is powered by the original 6.3 liter M100 V8 with mechanical fuel injection connected to a 4-speed automatic transmission.

According to the auction site Collecting Cars, this is one of only 2,190 short-wheelbase 600s of the W100 generation.

“One of its most notable elements is the 150-bar hydraulic pressure system that powers the windows, seats, sunroof, trunk and automatic doors,” the car listing said. “Dispensing with electric motors enables functions to run silently.”

In March 2021, the car underwent a £ 45,000 (US $ 62,215) overhaul by Mercedes-Benz specialist John Haynes, which included an overhaul of the hydraulic system, new gaskets and seals on the bumpers and headlights, and replacement of screws and trim They got the car back to the correct specs and a new gear shift was fitted.

The advertisement also states that the paintwork has been refreshed and the chrome has been restored.

The current owner and seller, businessman and entrepreneur Sukhpal Singh Ahluwalia is quoted in the listing reflecting on his time with the car: “I put a lot of heart and soul into this car, but I always knew I had to let it go even if I got stuck on it. I recently started returning to India and I know it will take a while to part with my collection. “

“It’s always been part of my personal plan, but it’s still an emotional process. And it doesn’t make saying goodbye to the 600 any easier. When I think about it, I just feel like the guardian of an important piece of rock and roll history. “

Harrison, a notable car enthusiast, is known to own another Mercedes-Benz 600, the stretch limo Pullman version he bought from John Lennon in 1971, a 500SEL with AMG accessories, as well as a Porsche 928S and a McLaren F1.
