A Bristol-based technology company has reached a deal to help Formula One team McLaren Racing improve its employees’ cybersecurity skills.
Immersive Labs was founded by former GCHQ trainer James Hadley and has developed an online platform for companies to identify gaps in employees’ cyber knowledge.
The McLaren F1 team will use the platform to protect valuable intellectual property and data, and develop its employees’ cyber skills to keep up with the threat of online attacks.
The skills of the manufacturer’s technical and non-technical teams are assessed through cyber crisis exercises and simulations run through Immersive Labs software.
As part of the multi-year partnership, both McLaren cars, driven by Bristol-born Lando Norris and Australian Daniel Ricciardo, will wear Immersive Labs branding on their front control arms from the end of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix this weekend. It will also be displayed on the cars during the 2022 championship.
Zak Brown, McLaren Racing CEO, said, “People and technology are critical to our team and we are excited to partner with Immersive Labs to help develop the cyber human skills that enable us to better take risk to control.
“We’re racing at race pace both on and off the track and look forward to this partnership accelerating the human component of our cybersecurity.”

McLaren and Immersive Labs will also work together at events to showcase the benefits of cyber training to executives. The first of these will be an event for Chief Information Security Officers on the sidelines of the GP in Abu Dhabi this weekend.
James Hadley, CEO of Immersive Labs, said, “As the impact of cyber risk spreads across the company, it is no longer reserved for the geeks in the basement.
“Businesses need to respond as a whole, which means that cyber knowledge, skills and judgment for everyone – from executives to technical teams – are continuously optimized.
“Competition in Formula 1 is no different and requires technology and people to work together to stay ahead. For this reason, the partnership with McLaren Racing is an excellent fit. “
The deal is the latest for Immersive Labs, which announced last month that its platform had been selected by the British Army to develop the cyber skills of its military personnel.
In November, the company also announced that it had acquired a US technology company to expand its offering of corporate cybersecurity training.
The company has entered into an agreement to purchase Pennsylvania-based Snap Labs for an undisclosed amount and will integrate its technology with its own platform.
