The UK squad has announced that it will field two McLaren 720S GT3s in the two-week Asian Le Mans Series in February and will use the new cars in other GT3 campaigns later this year, which will be announced at a later date.
Garage 59 Team Principal Andrew Kirkaldy said, “Garage 59 has a long history with McLaren and it’s great to be back with them in 2022.
“The 720S looked very promising last year so we’re really looking forward to getting out and racing with ours.”
Garage 59, which takes its name from the car number of the 1995 Le Mans 24 Hours victorious McLaren F1 GTR, won the 2016 Blancpain GT Series Endurance Cup with a McLaren 650S GT3 shared by Shane van Gisbergen, Rob Bell and Come Ledogar .
Like its MP4-12C GT3 predecessor from 2011, the car was developed by the Garage 59 sister company CRS GT under license from McLaren’s sports car production facility.
McLaren Automotive subsequently parted ways with CRS after opting to internally develop the GT3 version of the 720S for 2019.
This led to a switch for this season to the Aston Martin Vantage GT3 from Garage 59, which won the Pro-Am class of the BGTS Endurance Cup 2020 with team co-owners Chris Goodwin and Alexander West.
The team does not yet have any drivers for its Asia campaign for the two double header weekends in Dubai and Abu Dhabi on 11/12 and 19/20 respectively. Announced February, in which 25 vehicles in the GT class will take part.
Part of his driver line-up for a pair of Aston Martins for the ALMS 2021 was Marvin Kirchhofer, who was announced as a McLaren factory driver earlier this month.
Garage 59’s line-ups for Asia and the full program for 2022 will be announced in the New Year.
In 2021, the team fielded two cars in the GTWCE enduros, one in the Silver Cup and one in the Pro-Am class, as well as third overall place in the blue ribbon of the 24 Hours of Spa in a single piece with a semi-factory works drivers Nicky Thiim, Marco Sorensen and Ross Gunn.
