The Formula 1 Grand Prix of Italy 2021 will be remembered for the McLaren 1-2 finish of Daniel Ricciardo and Lando Norris as well as for the early retirement of championship contenders Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton.
Verstappen collided with Hamilton at Turn 1 when Hamilton came out of the pits in the middle of the race. The contact resulted in Verstappen’s car driving over Hamilton’s driver’s cockpit. The Halo safety device did its job, but both drivers were done for the day.
Ricciardo led from start to finish after overtaking Verstappen on the first lap at Turn 1 and drove through with a 1.7 second lead over teammate Norris. Valtteri Bottas, who started from the end of the grid after an engine swap penalty, raced through the field and completed the podium in third place.
