FIA issues new statement on Abu Dhabi investigation with key to deciding Lewis Hamilton's future | F1 | Sports

The FIA has issued a new statement on the investigation into the controversial end of last month’s Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, with the decision said to be key to Lewis Hamilton’s future.

Hamilton was left heartbroken at the season finale last season after being ousted to a record eighth world title by title rival Max Verstappen in the very last round.

The result was not without controversy, however, as the seven-time world champion had erased a once-comfortable lead when Verstappen lately capitalized on a controversial call from FIA director Michael Masi.

As a result, the race director divided opinion as he allowed several lapped cars between Hamilton and his title rival to take over a deployed safety car, resulting in the leading pair remaining nearly neck and neck with just one lap to go.

Hamilton and Verstappen were then controversially forced to stage a last-lap shootout to decide the World Championship, which the latter undoubtedly won thanks to a set of much fresher tyres.

“And then they finally have to be approved at the World Motor Sport Council meeting on March 18th in Bahrain, chaired by FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem.”

One who will no doubt be eagerly awaiting a decision is Hamilton, whose future in Formula 1 could well depend on the outcome of the investigation.

Following the controversy in Abu Dhabi, the Englishman was said to have been “disillusioned” with the sport and, having remained silent in public since the season finale, many have speculated his time behind the wheel could be over.
