Back to where they belong? McLaren’s long-awaited Italian GP victory can be the start of something special

Back to where they belong? McLaren's long-awaited Italian GP victory can be the start of something special

No sports team has a right to success. Trophies, awards, and praises can be obtained in a number of ways, some of which are healthier and tastier than others, but – no matter how much you’ve won in the past – there is no right to challenge at the top of a sport.

So many teams languishing at the bottom of the tables have reached the top at one point or another. Success does not come from aspiration. This is especially true in the harsh world of Formula 1, where champions and racing teams go through the process of slipping into the background before disappearing.

The once glorious names Lotus, Tyrrell and Brabham all disappeared. Williams, who dominated in the late 1980s and early 1990s, spent the past four seasons in an uproar, which resulted in the Williams family selling out. They luckily saw a slow resurgence in 2021, but if finishing eighth in the championship is an important result for them, it says a lot.

McLaren, the second most successful team in F1 history, threatened to fall further and further behind for a long time. As with their former rival Williams, it almost looked like it was a matter of tackling the decline and limiting the damage. That too was unsuccessful. But with Daniel Ricciardo’s victory for the team at the Italian Grand Prix, the return to the top is complete. The failures of Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton made the win easier, but the Australian really fought for the win, leading almost every lap. The MCL35M is a fast car. Ultimately, those responsible for resuscitating the team deserve a lot of credit.
