Starting in 2026, the FIA will introduce some rule changes for Formula 1 to create more environmentally friendly powertrains. These rule changes have aroused the interest of the Volkswagen Group, as both Audi and Porsche have been flirting with entry into Formula 1 for some time. While there have been many rumors about Audi’s possible entry into Formula 1, an official announcement should be made early next year.
A current Autocar report reads a letter from Audi boss Markus Duesmann and head of technical development Oliver Hoffman to FIA President Jean Todt: “Thanks to your efforts, we are now close to the finish line. Another milestone has recently been reached – the first draft of the technical, sporting and financial regulations … We believe that they contain satisfactory solutions for all objectives. “
The letter also says: “We look forward to working with you and your team to complete this important process and to confirm our entry into Formula 1 at the beginning of next year.”
While it’s not finished yet, it seems like Audi has every intention of getting into F1. Whether it does this alone or with another team remains to be seen.
Recent rumors pinned McLaren as Audi’s upcoming partner, with rumors claiming that Audi would buy the British F1 team and supercar company outright. McLaren denied these rumors immediately after their release, however. That doesn’t mean the two brands won’t partner for Formula 1, however, as a deal may not have been finalized at the time of McLaren’s previous statement.
There have also been rumors of Audi’s partnership with Williams and Red Bull, so it seems like no one outside of Audi is entirely sure what’s going to happen.
Since F1 is becoming more efficient, it makes sense for Audi to get into open motorsport. Audi wants to become an important player in the world of electrification and nothing advances technology like motorsport. For this reason, Audi left Le Mans racing to enter the Dakar with its electric rally racer.
We are very excited to see what Audi is doing in Formula 1 and whether it will work with a brand like McLaren.
