Dave Robson, the Head of Vehicle Performance Williams racesHe was happy that the team finally got the first points of 2021 formula 1 Season on Sunday, with Nicholas Latifi and George Russell both break into the top ten Hungarian Grand Prix.
The initial rain start helped them get out of their low grid positions as a number of drivers ahead of them were involved in turn one incidents, and their pit lane placement helped them restart the race after a red flag.
Latifi finished third in the opening laps before finishing eighth on the road while Russell finished ninth. Both drivers then moved up one place when Sebastian Vettel was disqualified from second place for technical reasons.
Robson says the team made the best of the situation Hungary, and although they ended up running out of fuel, they managed to clinch their first top ten finish since 2019 German Grand Prix and her first two-car-point placements since 2018 Italian Grand Prix.
“Today a small amount of rain made the field very lucky,” said Robson. “Of course we benefited, not least from the crashes at the first start of the race.
“However, the team made the best of the situation and made good decisions throughout the race. Both drivers were masters of their pace, their cars and their tires, and were consistently calm and confident.
“Although we lost a few places to faster cars in the end, we are still very satisfied with the result. The goal on the lead lap and in relatively dry conditions meant we had to work hard to manage the fuel, but that worked well and in conjunction with tire management. “
“The result is due to an enormous amount of work on the route and in the factory”
Robson says the result in Hungary deserves credit to the entire team, even if luck played a big role in the outcome of the race. He says everyone worked extremely hard and benefited from all of the exercises they did over the past few years to improve themselves.
He also says it gives the team the confidence to go on summer break and they will for that Belgian Grand Prix If you are optimistic again, you can compete for points. You are in front of the Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN Team and are seven points ahead of them and ten in front of the Uralkali Haas F1 Team.
“We were a little lucky today, but the result is due to the enormous amount of work on the track and at the factory and the ability to put into practice everything we have learned as a team over the past few seasons,” he said .
“We can now start our preparations for Belgium before we take a break. When we come back, we will attack the second half of the season with renewed confidence. “
