In times of COVID-19, teams need easy access to drivers who can step in with little preparation, and you never know when an unexpected opportunity may arise.

Like Nico Hülkenberg and Alex Albon, Kvyat is at the top of the list of drivers with new F1 racing experience, hence Alpine’s interest over the winter.

After losing his AlphaTauri seat at the end of last season, Kvyat finally seems to be out of the Red Bull environment. With Albon on standby as a reserve and the F2 grid crammed full of Marko protégés, it is hard to imagine that he will ever get another chance.

After a shaky start to 2016, however, he was soon demoted to Toro Rosso and replaced by the whimpering Max Verstappen. He was ousted from the junior team at the end of 2017, spent a year as a Ferrari sim driver, and was then unexpectedly brought back to STR in 2019.

At the end of last season, he was again removed from the renamed AlphaTauri team to make way for Yuki Tsunoda after being outdone by Monza winner Pierre Gasly.

Kvyat firmly believes that there was nothing more he could have done to impress the Red Bull hierarchy.
