After winning the Formula 2 title last year, Schumacher completed Formula 1 in 2021 and secured a seat on the Haas F1 team.
His German compatriot Vettel kept a close eye on Schumacher’s career after he faced his seven-time world champion father Michael between 2010 and 2012.
Vettel made it no secret how he looked up to Schumacher during his own career and was regularly on race weekends with Schumacher jnr.
Schumacher said he had received a bunch of advice from Vettel for five races of his rookie F1 campaign and revealed that he has made a strong friendship with the Aston Martin driver.
“I have a lot of respect for him and think that we can of course call it a friendship, which is very nice for me,” said Schumacher, quoted by Motorsport.com.
“He has so much experience and there are so many things I can learn from him.
“I think the biggest advice he has given me is never to forget why I am here. And that’s because we love the sport. If you lose that, you are in the wrong place.
“So I enjoy my life. I do the best in the world. I think it’s great to have someone like him who gives me advice here and there. “
So far this season, Schumacher has been Haas’ outstanding top performer, qualifying and finishing four of the first five races ahead of his teammate Nikita Mazepin.
The Ferrari Academy driver explained how having a “strong bond” with his Haas F1 mechanics helped build his confidence from race to race.
“The team is a big, big part of my development, but also a big part of my self-confidence,” said Schumacher.
“I take the trust they have in me from the team. You have great confidence in us as drivers. I have great confidence in my team.
“This bond is building on a very steep level at the moment and that will ultimately make up the time differences where you will always find the extra lap time because you have such a strong connection with the team.
“Even if we don’t see each other, we build on it because we have behind-the-scenes meetings that people probably never see, but they’re there and the work is daily.
“That is basically what we have to improve and we will continue to draw our strength from this in the future.”
