Sometimes you have to go backwards before moving forward. That is now the Haas team’s seemingly counter-intuitive goal, considering the ramifications of a woefully uncompetitive 2020, its worst season in Formula 1 to date.
Before the season started, the team took care of the direction of development. Not only did it fail to make progress, but it actively declined as new components did not affect vehicle performance as expected. After the race finally resumed in July, there was no break, just a continuation of the slide towards the back of the grid.
