It is crucial that Mick Schumacher is “patient” this year as the young German is tackling his first season in Formula 1 with Backmarker Haas.
This is the advice of former driver Christian Danner, who said the reigning Formula 2 champion put in a “great” performance on his debut in Bahrain compared to rookie team-mate Nikita Mazepin.
Danner told motorsport-magazin.com that Schumacher’s earlier Mazepin-like spin was understandable.
“The car is not that easy to drive,” said the 63-year-old German. “Mick did a great job and drove well.”
However, Danner said it will be more difficult to keep this shape for all of 2021.
“He has to be patient without losing the fun of Formula 1,” he said of Schumacher, the 22-year-old son of F1 legend Michael Schumacher.
“Because if he’s penultimate or penultimate on the grid from the middle of the season on, it can start to be no fun anymore.”
“You have to be mentally strong because everyday life quickly catches up with you. You have to imagine that you invest every minute of your life, every thought, every millisecond of energy that is available to you.
“And there comes a time when you want to be recognized for it again. But that is only possible through success,” added Danner.
That is why Danner Schumacher advises: “Do not drive faster than the car allows. You can only try to make the best of the situation.”
