Zandvoort returned in a heavily revised format to host the Dutch Grand Prix, while the Losail track in Qatar moved in as a last-minute replacement and Saudi Arabia made its scheduled debut on the calendar.

2. Max Verstappen [1]
Silverstone was the venue for F1’s first experiment with the new sprint qualifying format. Hamilton qualified first, but Verstappen beat him in the 100 km sprint and took pole for the race himself.

3. Charles Leclerc [1]
Kimi Raikkonen had to miss the Dutch and Italian races after contracting Covid-19 while Nikita Mazepin was out in Abu Dhabi. Leclerc was infected with the corona virus – for the second time – but only after the end of the season.

4. 38 [3]
Alonso left the grid in late 2018 and although he was out for only two seasons, the 2019 season had 21 races and the coronavirus-ravaged 2020 season still managed to contest a total of 17 races.

5. Mark Webber [1]
Red Bull reached outside of its junior driver pool for the first time since 2007 when it fielded former Racing Point driver Perez to replace Alex Albon for 2021. The Australian Webber was the last driver to do something similar.

AlphaTauri handed Red Bull Junior driver Yuki Tsunoda his F1 debut in place of Daniil Kvyat, while Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin replaced Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen at Haas.

7. Racing Point and Renault – Racing Point switched from Pink to Racing Green after being renamed Aston Martin in 2021, while the former Renault team introduced a new iridescent blue that became Alpine.

F1 broke the red flag record for a season with six different races that were stopped. They have been to Emilia Romagna, Azerbaijan, Great Britain, Hungary, Belgium and Saudi Arabia, the latter having two red flags in one race.

9. Lewis Hamilton [3]
Despite gloomy predictions for Mercedes after a bad test before the season and Verstappen’s pole position in the opening race in Bahrain, Hamilton managed to win the season opener.

10. Max Verstappen [3]
Red Bull driver Verstappen sent this message to the commissioners after he was shown a black and white flag – the equivalent of a yellow card in F1 – after a solid defense of his lead over Hamilton in the Brazilian Grand Prix.

11. Six [2]
Red Bull’s Verstappen won ten and Mercedes’s Hamilton eight. The other four were won by Valtteri Bottas (Mercedes), Perez (Red Bull), Esteban Ocon (Alpine) and Daniel Ricciardo (McLaren).

Charles Leclerc claimed pole after crashing in the last part of qualifying preventing his rivals from improving his time – but a gearbox failure discovered on race day prevented him from taking his place on the grid.

Red Bull driver Verstappen was in the lead for more than half of all laps driven in the 2021 season – more than two and a half times the 246 laps led by his closest rival Hamilton.

14. This is somewhat aptly a mixture of names for FIA Race Director Michael Masi, who came under fire towards the end of the season for a number of controversial decisions.

Hamilton finished more races than any other driver and was ranked in 20 of the 22 events, with teammate Bottas following in 17th.

It seems like a long time ago that the once great Williams team was competitive, but in fact, it was only four years since they finished fifth in the championship with 83 points. This year, 18 out of 23 points came second in Belgium.

17. Sebasitan Vettel [3]
Verstappen was fined $ 50,000 for touching the rear wing of rival Hamilton’s car to check his flexibility at the Brazilian Grand Prix – which led Vettel to joke his Aston Martin team when he did parked behind the Mercedes.

18. Five [3]
Races in China, Canada, Singapore, Japan and Australia were canceled during the season due to coronavirus restrictions. Vietnam was slated to debut in 2021 but was dropped back in 2020 after an official was charged with corruption.

19. Same love [1]
Aston Martin driver Vettel has become a standout fighter for LGBTQ + rights this season, wearing a bright rainbow t-shirt with this slogan and a pair of white rainbow-print trainers in Hungary.

20. Five [3]
Verstappen started from pole position in 10 of the 22 races of the season, twice as many as Hamilton with five. Bottas’s other Mercedes took four Poles, Ferrari’s Leclerc two and McLaren’s Norris one.
