The 22-year-old had a difficult start to this year’s campaign as he was constantly spinning on the track. Most notable was his fall in the opening race in Bahrain. However, Mazepin thinks the car is more unstable and just takes extra time to get used to.

As quoted by PlanetF1, Mazepin said, “If I had been asked about Bahrain, I would have given myself a very low score. But after carefully analyzing the past races, the reason for my pretty poor results and corners in the first three races was the car itself.

“After that I would probably have given myself a four,” he explained.

The rookie driver was well aware of the disappointing start he will see in his first year in Formula 1 and the pressure of this sport is lacking compared to its previous competitions.

He said: “Before the 2019 season, I was just mentally unprepared for the likely lack of results. You always want to show up and make it work. But unfortunately you don’t always get the results you want in racing and other areas of life.

“Of course it wasn’t easy this year. The print in F1 cannot be compared to any other series. But I think I am responding to it correctly and with dignity, ”he concluded.

How has Mazepin’s debut season been so far?

The 22-year-old rookie driver struggled to make a difference in his first season, to say the least. The underperforming Haas car leaves Mazepin out even on the first lap of qualifying and often finds himself at the end of the grid.

On race day, Nikita often struggles with spinal markers on the grid with the likes of Williams and Alfa Romeo. He was unable to score his first points of the season and is in 19th place, but hopes to learn from his mistakes and be better for the next race.

At the recent Azerbaijan Grand Prix, the Russian achieved his best result of all time with 14th place. This could give the Russian driver the much needed motivation for the upcoming race in France.
