Hone’s picture shows Grosjean’s figure approaching the barrier his Haas car had just breached before it went up in flames at the start of the 2020 Bahrain Grand Prix after contact with former AlphaTauri racer Daniil Kvyat.
In the picture, Grosjean is about to get out of the flames and over the barrier into the arms of Dr. Hauling Ian Roberts, Formula One’s medical rescue coordinator, while a Bahraini marshal fights the fire with a fire extinguisher that has crossed the track to reach the crime scene.
Grosjean was able to escape without life-changing injuries despite sustaining significant burns to his hands, which meant he couldn’t finish the last two races of an F1 stint that went back to 2012 after his first race in the seven-race category Year 2009.

Hone, who is part of the Haas squad as a team photographer in the garage for the Azerbaijan GP this weekend, won the award in the F1 category of the prestigious price list.
Regarding his victory, he said: “I am very happy and honored that I have won. The F1 season has been a long and tough year and it’s great that your work is recognized. “
After the shocking incident at the start of the first of two 2020 F1 races on the Bahrain circuit, Hone discussed how he got around to taking the picture that featured on the covers of major publications around the world.
“I shot the start of the race at Turn 2 and when the cars were over I turned around, heard a big bang and there was a huge fireball in the air,” he explained. “[I] obviously ran straight for it. Horrible scenes, but a lot of people rely on you to document what happens. So you just have to keep going. “
After his F1 stint ended, Grosjean moved to IndyCar and will compete for the Dale Coyne Racing team in all 12 road and road races on the 2021 championship schedule.
He took pole position and finished second at the most recent street circuit in Indianapolis – only his third start in the category.
Everyone at Motorsport.com would like to praise Andrew for winning the prize and acknowledge his fantastic efforts to capture the full extent of Grosjean’s fall and escape in the most difficult circumstances for everyone involved.
