Mazepin misses F1 final after positive COVID-19 test

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) – Nikita Mazepin will miss the Formula 1 race at the end of the season after testing positive for COVID-19.

Haas will only use one car for Mick Schumacher at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on Sunday. Substitute driver Pietro Fittipaldi was not entitled to replace Mazepin as Fittipaldi did not drive in at least one session that weekend.

Mazepin tested positive on site at the Yas Marina Circuit. A second test for the Russian was also positive.

The Haas team said Mazepin is asymptomatic but will self-isolate and follow “relevant health authorities”.

“Nikita is fine physically,” said Haas. “The Uralkali Haas F1 Team wishes Nikita all the best and we look forward to his return to the circuit in early 2022 for pre-season testing.”

Mazepin is in his first F1 season and the Russian had the best result of his career with 14th place in Hungary. He should start on Sunday 20th.
