When Oscar Piastri finished third ahead of Robert Shwartzman to secure the FIA Formula 2 drivers’ championship, one of the drivers who competed on the previous lap was absent from Abu Dhabi. Enzo Fittipaldi, who drove for Charouz in Jeddah, is still recovering after breaking his heel in a violent fall on the grid at the start of the main race of this lap.

The Formula 2 sessions in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, were probably even more haphazard than the Formula 1 sessions. Barrier repairs meant that the main race on Sunday was delayed by 40 minutes and the F2 field from the paddock of the support series into the pit lane on the track drove in the wrong direction. The racing session was then incorrectly canceled. Fortunately, the drivers finally rolled their cars out of the pit lane for the start of the race.

During the start of the race, ART’s Théo Pourchaire remained standing on the grid. Fittipaldi pulled his car sharply to the right of the main straight to avoid another competitor, but turned straight into the rear of Pourchaire’s handicapped vehicle at full speed. The massive impact hurled debris in all directions as Fittipaldi’s vehicle came to a halt near the pit wall. Both drivers were reported conscious, removed from their cars and taken to King Fahad Armed Forces Hospital.

Pourchaire was driven in an ambulance, but Fittipaldi was flown in a helicopter. Théo Pourchaire was the first to insure everyone on social media that he was fine, but that Enzo Fittipaldi was hurt. At the time, the Formula 2 race had been canceled after an incident between Olli Caldwell and Guilherme Samaia triggered a second red flag

Enzo Fittipaldi is the grandson of Emerson Fittipaldi, a two-time Formula 1 world champion. Enzo’s brother and Haas F1 reserve driver Pietro Fittipaldi finally hit social media at nearly 5 a.m. local time the next day to let everyone know that Enzo had broken his heel. I am happy that Enzo Fittipaldi sustained relatively minor injuries and I hope that he will recover quickly.
