After being promoted to F1 with Haas, Mazepin has become a backmarker due to the limited development of the VF-21.
After a difficult first race in his career, Mazepin finally managed to beat his teammate Mick Schumacher at the Monaco Grand Prix.
However, the 22-year-old Russian said the feeling of finally being able to handle his machinery was strange because of the different expectations placed on him.
When asked if it was a relief to have a strong weekend, Mazepin replied, “To be completely honest, it’s a little strange.
“I’m a racing driver and have always fought for the top positions in my racing career, whether in karting or in the junior categories.
“Having a positive weekend and qualifying in 19th place is still new to me, but at the same time this year has always been difficult and I think we have to stay humble and remember what our maximum is.
“Our maximum [in Monaco] was to stay on track and improve the lap time from FP3 and I did both. No relief, but definitely a contribution to maintaining the positive lead until 2022. ”
Mazepin said he had changed part of his approach to how he approached F1’s challenges after his pre-season struggles but was unwilling to provide details on his issues.
Team boss Günther Steiner said his driver was the happiest he was at the Monaco GP, and Mazepin replied: “Günther knows exactly why that is and it is best if it stays between him and me.
“I felt that some necessary changes needed to be made because I couldn’t get the situation working beforehand and I was very sure of what exact external factor I needed it on.
“I wasn’t sure if I would be the fastest, but I was sure it would give me the confidence I have.
“So far it has been going well, but at the same time I cannot predict the future. I only live today and we as a team had a positive day, so I feel like I can have a smile on my face.”
