"Look at Tsunoda and Schumacher"

Callum Ilott narrowly missed out on a place for the 2021 Formula 1 season, but the Briton still has all the hopes of making his F1 debut. A big advantage: guys he has beaten before do well in the premier class.

Ilott was associated a lot with the seats at Haas and Alfa Romeo last year and was also allowed to test. As part of Ferrari’s youth program, he is close to these teams, but an opportunity in F1 did not arise. Ferrari pushed Mick Schumacher to Haas and stayed at Alfa Romeo with Antonio Giovinazzi.

So Ilott found himself without a seat, but he now sees that others are doing well. “Yuki made a great impression in Bahrain. That was really good to see. “As for Mick, we all know that he often needs some time. But when he gets there, he gets there. You can already see its speed improving. I think they are doing a good job. It’s only a matter of time before they’re back on their feet, and then it’s easier for me to say, ‘Look, I’m the one who got through these two guys!’

F1 chance in 2022

Ilott is currently involved in the GT World Challenge Europe Endurance Cup and is also receiving several tests at Ferrari and Alfa Romeo, where he is under contract as a reserve driver this year. Despite not having a seat in a formula car, the Briton is confident that he has a chance of an F1 place before 2022.

” So I still think that I’m in a very good position. Yes, I have to wait a year. And I’ve also seen people have to wait two years. But I just concentrate on performing as well as possible in the GTs and in free practice, and then hopefully an opportunity will arise, ”concludes number two of the 2020 F2 championship.
