Haas driver Nikita Mazepin believes Netflix’s “Drive to Survive” showed that F1 drivers are people and that they have “a weaker side” in their characters.

The three seasons of the documentary series to date have opened up Formula 1 to a new audience and have made a significant contribution to making the sport known, especially on the US market.

For the first time this season, Mazepin was filmed by the Drive to Survive crew for the latest series, due to air next February.

The Russian has the feeling that after watching and now also participating in the TV show, he can understand why the drivers have assumed a different aura than before.

“It’s a great show,” said Mazepin. “Of course, this year is the first time I’ve been fully immersed in the show.

“I’m looking forward to the result and also looking forward to the feedback, because the drivers sometimes act like robots.

“People forget that behind helmets there are actually individuals who are just like everyone else, except that we go in circles.

“But we’re the same people and they only see a little, let’s say, a weaker side of us, a more familiar, a more private side that other people in a great audience couldn’t reach.

“So I’m glad Netflix is here, it’s growing slowly in Russia and hopefully some seasons will be translated into Russian and thank you for coming.”

Mazepin described working with the crew as “really cool” and said he was able to express more of his personality while filming.

“I tried to do as many normal things as possible,” added Mazepin. “We were at my home, we were at my university and a lot of other things.

“We actually spent a lot of time together so it was cool.”
