Schumacher and Mazepin left the KO qualifying on Friday after Q1, with only the top 15 drivers entering Q2. Both drivers set their best times on their third and final set of Pirelli P Zero Red soft tires. Schumacher lapped the ‘Temple of Speed’ in 1: 22.248 as 18th fastest, while Mazepin reached 20th place overall with a personal best of 1: 22.716.
Valtteri Bottas from Mercedes clinched pole for tomorrow’s sprint with a flying lap of 1: 19.555 – the Finn 0.096 seconds faster than his team-mate and title protagonist Lewis Hamilton.
Before qualifying on Friday, Schumacher and Mazepin only had a 60-minute free practice session in their VF-21s around the 5.793-kilometer circuit with 11 corners. Both drivers worked their way through one set of medium and two sets of softs with some basic run and qualifying sims. Mazepin’s fastest lap in FP1 was a 1: 23.445 (P19), with Schumacher setting a fastest time of 1: 23.551 (P20) – both drivers drove on the soft rubber.
Nikita Mazepin: “Another interesting, hectic qualifying out there. I was happy to have driven a clean lap in the end, as far as the start is concerned, as we were traveling very slowly on the straight before the last corner, unfortunately I jumped off on my fastest lap, which cost me some time. We have two races ahead of us this weekend and the pace looks very promising so I’m excited. “
Mick Schumacher: “At the end of qualifying it got a bit tight. It was good to do a good lap and to be in front of an Alfa Romeo – that is an achievement for us. We’re happy with what we achieved today. We’re looking forward to tomorrow, hopefully we’ve made the right changes to our car to be able to fight. What we learned from Silverstone is that Sprint Qualifying is a bit different than the race in terms of degradation, so we will probably have to attack and go with a different mindset than the main race. “
Günther Steiner: “A pretty good day for us. As much as you can say that it was uneventful, it was a good uneventful one. We had a good test in FP1 with both cars, no problems at all, and then we met in qualifying qualified.” one of the Alfa Romeo – a good success. Nikita has also come very close to that. All in all, we start tomorrow on P18 and P20 and are looking forward to the sprint qualifying. Hopefully we can move up a bit so we can have a better start positions on Sunday. “
