“It was my first time in a Formula 1 car in the wet – it was definitely not easy” – Mick Schumacher

"It was my first time in a Formula 1 car in the wet - it was definitely not easy" - Mick Schumacher

The Uralkali Haas F1 Team saw both rookie drivers after an eventful race on the Grand Prix of Emilia Romagna at the Imola, Italy. Mick Schumacher finished in sixteenth position and Nikita Mazepin each in seventeenth place.

Both drivers started with the wet tires on a damp track Autodromo Enzo and Dino Ferrari Circuit. Mazepin escaped unscathed as Nicholas latifi contacted him as he crashed into the barriers.

In the subsequent safety car phase, the young Schumacher lost control in slippery conditions and suffered damage to the front wing. The German had to circulate around the track until the pit wall was reopened and the team could repair the damage.

The Haas F1 team is at the bottom of the timesheets and in a mixed conditions race it was a success to see both rookie drivers finish the race.

Schumacher had a hot time on the first couple of laps which he survived to finish the race and said: “It was my first time in a Formula 1 car in the wet – it was definitely not easy. To be honest, I wasn’t exactly sure what happened the moment I was spinning, it happened pretty quickly. I don’t know if I was too aggressive or if it was a puddle or whatever.

“We’ll analyze that, but I’m pretty disappointed with myself. Up until then we had been in a good position. Overall, I think it was a positive race, we finished 16th and we were good in terms of pace. We saw the checkered flag and that was the goal. “

Nikita Mazepin: “It was a good learning experience in my pocket”

Mazepin had a difficult start to his Formula 1 career. In the difficult conditions, he survived contact with Latifi’s car and managed to finish the race. The Russian had a consistent race without his signature twists and said: “So much happened in this race, from the start in the wets that weren’t really expecting it because the sunshine wasn’t long before the start, then a red flag and loads of things basically happened. We just weren’t fast enough today to fight with others.

“It was a good learning experience and it was good to see the checkered flag. I don’t think Nicolas (Latifi) knew I was there when he came back over the track. I gave him all the space I had, but I don’t think he knew I was there. I think it was just unfortunate for him. I don’t think anyone had an easy race today, but I think it was a very exciting race for the fans. “

It’s a learning experience for both drivers in their debut season in a slow car. That they managed to finish the race in such difficult conditions is a good step forward for the team.
