Haas signs contract to keep Mick Schumacher

Mick Schumacher is expected to be announced shortly as Haas driver for 2022 and ties to end with a move to Alfa Romeo.

The German is in his first year in Formula 1 and is learning his craft at the highest level of motorsport with the team that admitted before the start of the season that they would drive in the back field all the time.

That was because they struggled in 2020, only scored three points, and decided to put all of their development focus on next year’s brand new car.

So far, Schumacher and his teammate, rookie colleague Nikita Mazepin, have had as much fighting as expected.

The son of Michael Schumacher, the seven-time ex-world champion, achieved the highest ranking in Azerbaijan with 13th place, although he reached Q2 in France.

Recent reports suggested that Schumacher could be standing up for a move to Alfa Romeo, possibly to replace Kimi Raikkonen, if the Finn decides to retire later this season. Schumacher tested for Alfa Romeo in his garb as part of the Ferrari Driver Academy.

But Günther Steiner, the team boss at Haas, has confirmed that Schumacher’s contract with his squad is concluded for 2022 and that he will stay with Mazepin.

About the Russian-born driver, whose father is the team’s main sponsor, Steiner told Motorsport.com: “Everything is signed, everything is fine.”

On Schumacher he added: “There are a few things that just need to be clarified. It’s obviously a three-way deal because he has one with Ferrari.

“There must be a couple of Ts crossed and a couple of I’s spotted, and then we’ll get there. But it’s not Mick … it is him [not] He tries to say he didn’t sign, but there are agreements.

“But because of [the contract being] Three is always more difficult than a simple one-on-one contract. “

The situation for Schumacher regarding Alfa Romeo – for which he was supposed to drive in FP1 at the Nürburgring last October before the session was canceled due to bad weather – may have changed since the Italian company extended its contract with Sauber, the brand team directs.

While Ferrari, who supplies engines for Alfa Romeo, has placed Antonio Giovinazzi next to Räikkönen since 2019, team boss Fred Vasseur has insisted that the choice of drivers from 2022 is the sole responsibility of the Swiss company.
