Formula 2 driver Robert Shwartzman will drive for Haas in the post-season test in Yas Marina, the team has confirmed.
Shwartzman is the newest member of the Ferrari Driver Academy to have a test chance with his customer team. He made his F1 test debut last year with Scuderia.
Before that he was a team mate of Haas driver Mick Schumacher in F2 and Formula 3. With two remaining triple header laps in this year’s F2 season, Shwartzman is third overall, 43 points behind leader Oscar Piastri. He has achieved two victories, both in sprint races with partially reversed starting positions.
“This will be my first test with the Haas F1 team and I’m really looking forward to meeting a new team and environment and learning as much as possible from them,” said Shwartzman. “Having the chance to drive for another F1 team is just amazing and I can’t wait to work with everyone.”
Haas team boss Günther Steiner said that Shwartzman was “obviously rated highly by Ferrari, since he has been part of their driver program since the end of 2017”.
While the test will bring Shwartzman valuable extra miles in a Formula 1 car, it’s unlikely to lead to a racing seat next year. Haas has already confirmed that Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin will also drive for them in 2022, all other places in the field are occupied.
However, it is a candidate for the new mandatory rookie driver training drives that will be introduced next year.
“His ability becomes clear when you look at his performances in the last few seasons – especially his rookie campaign in Formula 2 last year – which competed against our own two drivers Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin,” said Steiner. “We are pleased to be able to enable Robert to work in a Formula 1 car and look forward to working with him in Abu Dhabi.”
