The Haas F1 team hoped that both cars could play a leading role in Q2 qualifying Grand Prix of the Eifel In the Nürburgring.
Romain Grosjean had set a good time that looked like it would take him to the next lap, but due to track restrictions at turn four, his time was cleared. He then found it difficult to adjust as well another time after struggling with his second set of tires and getting stuck in traffic.
Despite starting in sixteenth place, Grosjean believes he can still get something out of the race if the “unexpected” happens.
“The track was good, it’s a mega-track to drive, it’s a pleasure,” said Grosjean. “Of course we know with our car that we have to be in full swing from the first lap in the first quarter in order to enter the second quarter.
“Unfortunately I made it on my first lap on the second set of tires and on the second I got traffic – so that was it. It’s a bit of a shame, but we’ll do better tomorrow.
“I think the unexpected is our best chance in the race.”
Kevin Magnussen was the stronger of the driver duo and brought his VF-20 into the second quarter. In the end, however, he was the weakest in the pack and qualified in fifteenth. He will start right in front of his teammate.
“I think we got the best out of the car in qualifying,” said Magnussen. “It looked pretty strong in the first quarter, but then other people found a lot more lap time than we seemed.
“We ended up falling back to our P15 spot in the second quarter, but that’s where we are and we will continue to try to do better.
“We’ll try to do a good job tomorrow. This race weekend has been a little strange so there may be some options. ”
Team boss Guenther Steiner I was happy that the teams finally had a run to test the track in free practice on Saturday. He’s not very happy that both cars didn’t make it through the second quarter, but he appreciates the hard work the team puts in every weekend.
Steiner said, “It was good to go out there today in FP3, which was really FP1 – whatever you want to call it, but it went well and we started our program.
“We prepared as well as possible for qualifying. We almost managed to get both cars into the second quarter. Unfortunately Romain (Grosjean) was a bit overwhelmed and his best time was disqualified. We got one in Q2, and at least that’s what we’re trying to do.
“It’s hard work. I appreciate how hard everyone is working to achieve this small achievement.”
