Haas team boss Günther Steiner joked that his drivers “drink from a hose” in order to adapt to life in Formula 1.

Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin both suffered setbacks on the first two laps of the 2021 season at the wheel of the VF-21, the slowest car.

Last time in Imola, the drivers were driven into the race in their second Grand Prix in the wet. Schumacher spun in a safety car phase and damaged his front wing.

The German still managed to cross the line ahead of Mazepin, who was also spinning towards the end of the race.

“We just got the rain and had to deal with it and learn from it,” said Steiner. “The drivers are drinking from a water hose, every Grand Prix brings something new to the table.

“For learning, it is ideal to just learn things like the processes and behavior in these situations.

“If you’ve done these things once, the second time – it’s sure to be a lot less stressful, I would say. Do you want everything in the beginning – maybe not, but when it comes you take the experience. I think it’s a good thing to have all of these new experiences. “

F1 is approaching its first double headed ball of 2021, with Portugal and Spain slated for the next two race weekends.

Despite the challenges that Haas posed in the first two rounds, Steiner affirmed that the team will not change its approach at the next events.

“Nothing else than the first two races – gain as much experience as possible, get both drivers to the finish line in both races, keep learning and expand your racing knowledge in Formula 1,” he said.

“The goal hasn’t changed, we just keep our heads down and learn as much as possible.”
