Sprint qualifying for three Grand Prix races in 2021 was unanimously approved by the FIA Formula 1 Commission, according to an announcement on Monday.

The exact dates and locations of the events have not been announced, but are scheduled to take place at two European and one non-European venues this season.

According to the newly approved format, a qualification will take place on the Friday after the first free practice, in which the starting grid for the sprint qualifying on Saturday will be determined. The purpose of the new format, according to the FIA, is to “increase the action on the track and involve the fans in new and innovative ways”.

“I am pleased to see that Formula 1 is looking for new ways to get in touch with their fans and to add the concept of sprint qualifying to the spectacle of a race weekend. This was made possible by the continued collaboration between the FIA, Formula 1 and all teams, “said FIA President Jean Todt.

“F1 is stronger than ever as everyone involved works together in this way. Much has been done to ensure that the sporting, technical and financial aspects of the format are fair.”

The news was well received by Haas’ F1 racing team after it was released.
