Haas F1 feels “honor and pressure” and brings back the Schumacher name

Haas F1 feels ‘honour and pressure’ bringing back Schumacher name

Schumacher will move up to F1 this year after winning the F2 title last year and join the Haas team along with his rookie colleague Nikita Mazepin.

Schumacher is the son of the seven-time F1 world champion Michael Schumacher and joins the series nine years after his father retired from motorsport.

Haas F1 boss Steiner said while it was an honor for the team to play a role in Schumacher Jr.’s graduation and the family’s return to the grid, he was under no illusions about the extra spotlight that was shining on the Team would be directed.

“The name Schumacher is a legend about Michael in Formula 1,” Steiner told Motorsport.com.

“It’s fantastic to take in his son and I think it’s an honor for us. When I think back to the time Michael drove, he had that aura [about him]and now we have his son on our team.

“I think for a young team we do things right and we do things wrong, but we always try to do our best whatever it is.

“To have [Mick] is actually an honor, but it also comes with a lot of pressure. I am fully aware of this and have no illusions.

“We will do our best to do our duty to move him to bigger things in life.”

Schumacher is a member of the Ferrari Driver Academy. His move to Haas is a sign of the closer relationship between the two teams from 2021.

The 21-year-old won the F2 title in the finals in Bahrain, defeating his FDA member Callum Ilott and the Red Bull youngster Yuki Tsunoda.

Steiner felt that the extra boost to win the F2 title would help Schumacher in his rookie season in F1 and build his confidence in difficult times.

“It’s a big statement and I think it’s good for everyone’s confidence to win a championship as competitive as F2 [in 2020]”Said Steiner.

“As with any championship, there are good years when it’s more competitive and years when it’s less [competitive]. In my opinion [2020] was very competitive. It was fought over until the last race.

“For him, participating as a champion means the initial confidence when he has problems in Formula 1 because everything is new.

“He can always go back and say he was the F2 champion. All of these things help when you get into F1. “
