  • Kevin Magnussen has been moving to IMSA since 2014 after a Formula 1 race.
  • Magnussen will take part in Chip Ganassi Racing’s Cadillac DPi program together with Renger van der Zande.
  • Magnussen has a podium finish in Formula 1, which opens the 2014 season with McLaren at the Australian F1 Grand Prix.

One door has closed and now another has opened for Haas F1 driver Kevin Magnussen.

Magnussen, who loses his Formula 1 drive at the end of the season after four years with the Haas F1 Team, will complete a full-time drive with Chip Ganassi Racing in the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship for the Cadillac Daytona Prototype (DPi) from Ganassi Racing 2021 .

Ganassi Racing announced this on Thursday as Magnussen began preparations for this weekend’s F1 Sahkir Grand Prix in Bahrain.

“Chip Ganassi Racing is an extremely successful team in many different racing series,” said Magnussen on Thursday in Bahrain. “I will effectively be joining a new team from DPi at IMSA, but a team that has a lot of experience in the category and has had success. I am very much looking forward to joining a team that I know will be very competitive.”

“Just the thought of being able to look forward to a season in which I know we have a chance to win is a really good feeling and I’m really looking forward to it.”

Magnussen’s father Jan has been driving sports cars in the US for more than two decades and has two IMSA championships and two American Le Mans Series titles.

“I was there and watched him at a lot of races,” said Kevin Magnussen. “I just always enjoyed the atmosphere and was very curious about these tracks because they are great tracks there.”

Magnussen raced in 2014. He has a career podium in 117 career F1 starts. That podium came in the form of second place in his first F1 race in Melbourne with McLaren in 2014.

“If you work in professional racing anywhere in the world, you know the name Chip Ganassi and its significance for motorsport,” said 28-year-old Magnussen. “Chip built one of the best racing organizations on and off the track, and you can look back in history and see the tremendous track record, especially when it comes to sports car racing. It’s a great opportunity for me to work with CGR, Renger and Cadillac. I can’t wait to get started, meet the team and start preparing for the 2021 season. “

In addition to Magnussen, Ganassi will include sports car veteran Renger van der Zande in the Cadillac DPi program for the next season.

“I was lucky enough to have raced in sports cars with Scott (Dixon) and won, and I think he really embodies what the whole organization of Chip Ganassi Racing is about,” said van der Zande, The Team Know how to win the big races.

“One of the things that struck me was hearing that, as a former driver, Chip always wanted to build and build a team that he wanted to race for. He certainly did, and those results speak for themselves in a lot of series me think Kevin and I are both excited, to say the least, and ready to start the 2021 season in Daytona. ”
