Lewis Hamilton is currently aiming for a whopping eighth world title but faces a massive threat from Max Verstappen, who has a much faster car in his hand. Despite the speed disadvantage, a former F1 driver opened up how Hamilton could still win the title this season.

Former Haas F1 driver Romain Grosjean regards the seven-time world champion as one of the most consistent drivers in the history of the sport and appreciates that the Briton is rarely a victim of breakdowns on the track.

The Frenchman, who is only a few weeks away from walking the Mercedes on his home track, spoke about the one aspect that sets Hamilton apart from other drivers.

“He doesn’t make mistakes. Very rare; he did one in Imola but then recovered well from it. Even under difficult conditions, Turkey was a good example of wetness last year, ”he said on the Beyond the Grid podcast.

“If Valtteri [Bottas] Lewis had a nightmare afternoon, turned around, fell by the wayside and took his 7th world title and made no mistakes. “

The 2020 Turkey Grand Prix race had twists and turns all afternoon, but at first it looked like one of the Racing Point drivers was going to take the race win. Plus, Hamilton wasn’t anywhere near the top three until halfway through the race.

What followed was the master class of the seven-time world champion. While others pitted twice, the Briton opted for a one-stopper. And despite an almost dead set of tires, Hamilton managed to see the checkered flag in P1 with a lead of over 30 seconds.

When the time comes, Lewis Hamilton will be there

Grosjean revealed that Hamilton never makes costly mistakes on race days and limits such mistakes to training sessions.

“One thing we have to admit is that Lewis very rarely makes mistakes that are expensive,” said Grosjean. “He spins, he can crash in free practice. It happens to all of us. But when the time comes, he will be there. “

The last time Hamilton made a big mess was at the German Grand Prix in 2019. The damp racetrack in Hockenheim caused the British to fly into the barriers in the seaplane and damage his front wing. In the end, Hamilton finished ninth in the race.

Almost three seasons have passed and the 36-year-old has kept his nose clean so far. Can he maintain this incredible streak through 2021 and secure a record-breaking eighth championship title?
