George Russell says he Williams Racing Team can be satisfied with their performance during the Spanish Grand Prix although the British racing driver finished fourteenth on Sunday afternoon.
Russell was involved in the battle for tenth place and was challenging Fernando Alonso for this place just for it to pass Lance Stroll, Kimi Raikkonen, Sebastian Vettel and Pierre Gasly dropping it on the fourteenth as he struggled with his hoops.
The Mercedes Benz Protégé says it’s good to see Williams battling for merit points and Russell admitted they were so close to getting that breakthrough result that will empower the entire team as they try to stand out from the bottom of the championship standings .
“We have to be happy with our work today,” said Russell. “The car in today’s race felt good and I was very confident, but the result doesn’t quite reflect that as we started P15 and finished P14.
“We were from one source and the guys around us were from one source. I fought with Fernando (Alonso) trying to get past him and the guys behind me sat on the brand new soft tires that were much faster. As soon as I passed one, they all passed.
“The tires were at the limit, I was at the limit and the car was at the limit. That was the maximum and I’m very happy that we chose this strategy as it gave us half a chance. We were so close to a much better result and hope we have more of these race weekends.
“Fighting for merit there was a great job.”
“As we expected it was a challenging race” – Nicholas Latifi
Nicholas latifi Williams had a more challenging race in the second, with the Canadian finishing in sixteenth.
Latifi felt the FW43B was the best he had all weekend on Sunday and it allowed him to finish ahead of either of them Uralkali Haas F1 Team Driver and Alonso making a late pit stop after leaving the points payment positions.
“As we expected it was a challenging race,” said Latifi. “Even though the pace is not what we’d like it to be, I’m glad the most important session of the weekend was the one where the car felt best.
“With a strong strategy and some good overtaking maneuvers on the track, we managed to get in front of both Haas cars. I think we’re finishing the weekend on a high note, but we have a lot of homework to do ahead of Monaco too. “
